First edition, inscribed by Herbert Hoover

Herbert Hoover: The Challenge to Liberty, signed first edition

“I have no fear that the inherent and unconquerable forces of freedom will not triumph. But it is as true today as when first uttered that ‘the condition upon which God hath given liberty to man is eternal vigilance.’ We have in our lifetime seen the subjection of Liberty in one nation after another. It has been defeated by the untruth that some form of dictation by government alone can overcome immediate difficulties and can assure entry into economic perfection. America must not and it will not succumb to that lure. That is the issue of our generation, not a partisan issue but the issue of human liberty.

“The spark of liberty in the mind and spirit of man cannot be long extinguished; it will break into flames that will destroy every coercion which seeks to limit it."

HOOVER, Herbert. The Challenge to Liberty. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1934. Octavo, original red cloth, original dust jacket. $950.

First edition (with Scribner’s “A” and seal), signed and inscribed by Hoover on the front free endpaper: “To the Lenox Library Association / With the good wishes of / Herbert Hoover”.

Written a year after leaving office, The Challenge to Liberty is Hoover’s impassioned response to what he believed were the threats to American individualism inherent in Roosevelt’s New Deal. Inscribed to the renowned Lenox Library Association (founded in 1856). Book near-fine, rare dust jacket with minor edgewear and a little fading to spine.
